I’m sure MC Escher was a Cyclist

We have been on slopes that look like they should be easy, but feel like we’re loaded with bricks, and hills slanted up that we glide across. Whether its emotional, fatigue or a peculiar reality, I dont know, but the illusion is surely there.

Happy Summer Solstice!!!

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

We had an awesome, amazing Summer Solstice spent on the Northern Expedition, the ferry from Prince Rupert to Port Hardy, BC. If you ever get the chance to take this 15-hr journey, do it!! and ENJOY EVERY MINUTE, in the words of our fellow motorcycle traveler from Georgia. Intensely, “enjoy every moment, lots of miles and even more smiles”! We’re on Day 7 now, just stopped in Port McNeil for a quick hot chocolate and a chance to jump online! On we go…

Northern BC is Beautiful

We’ve been riding for three days now, and its truly amazing. The mountains and thick forest is endless. I’m amazed at how we can ride for so long and see no houses. Yesterday we rode a long way from New Hezelton to Terrace and in between maybe a hand full of homes and a couple of Native reserves. But other than that just a few cars and highway maintenance.
But we’re sore! I (D) am so sore around the knees and yes my hide! Shuffling around the seat like - well, like an amateur cyclist thats been in the saddle for 3 days.
Becky is amazing - tired, but unstoppable, I’m lucky she likes me, because if she didn’t she would be long gone. But strangely is helps me to know that her rear end is sore to.
A shorter ride today, whew.

t - 1: The Day Before

This time tomorrow we’ll be on the road! It’s crazy to think of how our ideas and ambitions back in January have been rolling into place day after day, and tomorrow we start the bicycle part of this adventure!

This weekend we loaded up the bikes with all our gear and were quite surprised to find that, although quite heavy, we still have available space - one whole pannier in fact, which will be perfect for carrying food, the most important item on this trip! And in preparation of the coming crisp, cool nights camping in northern B.C, we’ve spent the last two nights sleeping in the tent on the deck at Tulani Ranch. Tulani is the starting point of our ride where Darren’s parents and brother have just moved and are in the beginning steps of planting their seeds. It has been the perfect place for the start of our Root Ride as we have been able to help set the land in preparation for such roots. Two of the projects we have worked on while here have been building a greenhouse and planting some fruit trees, tomatoes, and berries. In addition, we’ve shoveled, raked, and piled rocks, carried logs, split wood, and have had our first experience of moving and herding cows. We have been lucky enough to see bears, deer, and numerous birds, and we have even witnessed the unbelievable engineering abilities of beavers. (more…)
